General informations - Remetea

Remetea is one of the most populous village in the area, located 75 km away from Miercurea Ciuc, and 18 km away from Gheorgheni.

Legend has it the founder of the village named Boniface Kendeffy was Franciscan monk, the right hand of Cardinal George Martinuzzi Frater, governor of Transylvania until the governor's assassination in 1551. In the folloing years he chose Szeklerland as his exile, then, according to tradition on a hill above the left bank of the Mureş river he built a little chapel, where he spent solitarily his remaining days was generically called the place of Hermit. When the village was built in that area, it got its name after the hermit (Remete).

Remetea is one of the younger settlements in the region despite the fact it has a rich history. Tradition and modern elements are both present in today's life, knit closely together, visible in its architecture, customs and people's lifestyle.

To note, the piece land belonging to Remetea is rich in mineral water,  the water rich in calcium, magnesium, iron. The sulphurous and naturally carbonated water has a wide range of currative effects on the human body.

What's more, the importance of the village as a log floating center was dominant till the 18th century, and till the beginning of  20th century 27 watermills and other water propelled structures were functioning to process wood and flour, also oil presses, saws boards, etc.

Remetea is located below the Eastern foothills of the Gurghiu Mountains, these mountains being the favorite hunting place of  Hungarian kings and princes of Transylvania. The Crown Prince Rudolf of the Habsburg family, Emperor Franz Joseph and his son VII. Edward, King of Great Britain also hunted in the forests of the Gurghiu Mountains. The close surroundings of the settlements provide a good terrain for hikers as well.
